Tobi’s Picture Puzzles is a free online jigsaw game for toddlers, preschoolers and young kids. Tobi the beaver builder holds up the puzzle box so your child can always see the picture. Drag a piece close to its place and it snaps in with a happy click. When the last piece is in, the picture comes alive: the train rolls, fish swim, balloons float and the sun turns. Start with four big pieces and grow to nine and sixteen.
How to play
- Drag a piece to its place in the picture. It snaps in when it is close.
- Or tap a piece, then tap its place. Keyboard: Tab, arrows and Enter.
- Turn on help to see a faint picture on the board.
- Try “Swap tiles”: tap two tiles to swap them until the picture is right.
- Finish puzzles to earn stars and unlock new pictures.
Controls
- Drag a piece with your finger or the mouse and let go near its place. It snaps in when it is close enough.
- Or tap a piece to pick it up, then tap its place on the board. Tap the piece again to put it back.
- Keyboard: use Tab and the arrow keys to move between pieces and places, and Enter or Space to choose. Escape lets go of a piece.
Tips and strategy
- Start with the corners and the edges. Pieces with a straight side belong at the border of the picture.
- Look at the colors: blue sky pieces go at the top, green grass and yellow sand go at the bottom.
- Check the picture on Tobi’s box lid whenever you are not sure where a piece goes.
- Stuck? Turn on help to see a faint picture on the board. After two tries in a wrong place, the right place glows softly.
- Every puzzle gives stars: one for 2×2, two for 3×3 and three for 4×4, plus a bonus star when you finish without help.
Game modes and difficulty
There are two ways to play. Jigsaw mode has real puzzle pieces with knobs that you drag from the tray onto the board. Swap tiles mode mixes square tiles on the board, and you swap two at a time until the picture is right. Both modes come in 2×2, 3×3 and 4×4. Three pictures are open from the start, and seven more unlock with stars.
History and background
Jigsaw puzzles began in the 1760s, when London mapmakers glued maps onto wood and cut them along the borders of countries to help children learn geography. Later, puzzles with pictures of farms, trains and castles became a favorite toy for families.
Researchers have found that young children who play with puzzles often show better spatial skills, like turning and fitting shapes in their mind. This digital version keeps the calm of a real puzzle and adds friendly sounds, sparkles and a happy beaver who never says “wrong”.
