Play Klondike solitaire online for free, right in your browser. Deal a fresh game, sort the seven columns into alternating red and black runs and build all four suits from ace to king. Choose Draw 1 for a relaxed game or Draw 3 for the classic challenge, undo as often as you like and try to beat your best time. It works on computers, tablets and phones.

How to play

  1. Build the seven columns down in alternating colors (red on black, black on red).
  2. Only a king, or a run starting with a king, can fill an empty column.
  3. Click the stock to turn one or three cards. When it runs out, click it again to reuse the waste pile.
  4. Drag cards, or tap a card to move it to the best place automatically.
  5. Build each suit on the foundations from ace to king to win.

Controls

  • Drag a card, or a run of face-up cards, onto another column or a foundation. Dragging works with a mouse and with your finger on a touch screen.
  • Click or tap a card to move it automatically to the best legal place. Cards go to a foundation first when they can.
  • Click or tap the stock to turn cards. When the stock is empty, click it again to turn the waste pile back over. Press D on a keyboard to draw.
  • Use Undo (or Ctrl+Z) to take back moves, and New game to deal again. When every card is face up, press Auto-complete to finish the game.

Tips and strategy

  • Turning over face-down cards is the key to Klondike. When you have a choice, move from the column with the most hidden cards.
  • Do not rush to empty a column unless you have a king ready to put there. An empty column is only useful for a king.
  • Be careful about sending low cards to the foundations too early. A black five may still be needed to hold a red four.
  • In Draw 3, think before you take a card from the waste. Removing one card changes which cards you will see on the next pass through the stock.
  • If you are stuck, use Undo to try a different line. Many games that look lost can still be won another way.

Game modes and difficulty

Draw 1 turns one card at a time from the stock, so every card is always within reach. It is the friendlier mode and great for beginners. Draw 3 turns three cards at once and only the top one can be played, which makes it harder and more strategic. Your choice is remembered for the next visit.

History and background

Patience card games appeared in Europe in the late 18th century and became a popular pastime in the 19th century. Klondike is usually linked to the Klondike region of Canada and the gold rush of the late 1890s, although its exact origin is not known.

The game became known around the world when it came with home computers in the 1990s, and millions of people learned it on their first computer. Not every deal can be won: studies suggest that most deals are solvable with perfect play, but far fewer are won in practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this solitaire game free?

Yes. It is completely free, runs in your browser and needs no download or account.

What is the difference between Draw 1 and Draw 3?

In Draw 1 you turn one card from the stock at a time. In Draw 3 you turn three and can only play the top one, which makes the game harder.

Can every game of solitaire be won?

No. Some Klondike deals cannot be solved at all. If you get stuck, try Undo or start a new game.

How many times can I go through the stock?

As many times as you like. When the stock runs out, click it to turn the waste pile over and start again.
